Topsoil & Compost

Proper soil care offers good protection for your lawn.

A lush, green lawn starts with good soil. Healthy lawns need six inches of fertile topsoil. Most soils need a little help. Adding topsoil, topdressing and/or compost to your yard ensures lawn success.

Identification
As the name implies, topsoil is the top level of soil. Fertile and soft, it contains the nutrients plants need to grow. Dead pan, found underneath topsoil is hard and infertile.

Significance
Good topsoil is necessary for a healthy lawn. The topsoil at many new home sites has been removed or compacted. Before planting a lawn or laying seed, spread a layer of compost on ground. Haul in new topsoil, if necessary. Till up the ground to loosen the soil.

Benefits
Sod is expensive. The best protection for this investment is proper soil care. A good topsoil provides the foundation for healthy growth. Compost adds slow-releasing nutrients and lightens the soil. Compost improves drainage in both sandy and clay soils.

Types
Not all topsoils and composts are equal. Some topsoils may actually contain dead pan or toxic chemicals. Compost quality can vary depending on the ingredients and process.

Potential
Use compost and topsoil on established lawns, as well. Over time, soil can become depleted and compacted. Spread a thin layer of compost and topsoil on the grass every spring. This top dressing works its way down into the soil, providing nutrients and improving the soil.
